Spider veins and varicose veins are two types of vein conditions that affect millions of people, mostly women, around the world. Both of these conditions involve the appearence of bulging or visible veins in the legs, but they differ in their size, severity, and location.
Spider veins, also known as telangiectasia, are small, thin veins, that appear close to the surface of the skin, usually on the legs and the face. They are typically red, blue, or purple in color, and often resemble a spider web or tree branches. Spider veins are or stinging sensations around the affected area.
Vericose veins on the other hand, are larger and more prominent veins that appear swollen, twisted, and raised above the skin’s surface. They often develop in the legs and feet, where gravity puts pressure on the veins, causing them ti weaken and stretch. Varicose veins may cause discomfort, pain and swelling, especially after standing or sitting for long periods. In severe cases, they may lead to skin changes, such as ulceration and discoloration.
Both spider veins and vaicose veins are caused by a varity of factors, including genetics, aging, prequency, hormonal changes, obesity, and prolonged sitting or standing. Treatment options for those conditions vary depending on the severity and symptoms, but may include lifestyle changes, compression stockings, sclerotherapy, laser therapy, or surgery.
Done as medical or cosmetic intervention to resolve veins on all surfaces of the body. From simple spider veins to large resistant webs we can help you address them all.
Success rates with most treatment regimens with good vascular function is 80% after 6-8 weeks.
*It is important to consult a medical professional if you have concerns about spider veins or varicose veins, as they may indicate and underlying circulatory or vascular condition that requires medical attention.*
LASER SCLEROTHERAPY
Primarily utilized when the vessels are too small or too many to be feasible for injecting. Location also dictates options for intervention. Commonly used on the legs, hands, feet, ankles, and face.
TREATMENT OPTIONS
LASER VS INJECTION
INJECTION SCLEROTHERAPY
Classic sclerotherapy, where a vessel is accessed with a small needle and a sclerosant is introduced to the vein. The lumen of the vein is irritated allowing for involution to occur given time and reabsorption.
Common sites for injection are the hands, feet, ankles, legs, chest, abdomen, face and neck.
POST TREATMENT
The site is wrapped or a pressure dressing is applied if applicable. Maintenance of this pressure dressing is necessary to help prevent recurrence of disease.
Recurrence rates after injection approaches 20%. To prevent recurrence we recommend:
-
Avoiding heat exposure of treated site
-
Limit use of oral anticoagulants to prevent blood from opening treated areas (Ibuprofen, Motrin, Aspirin, Aleve)
-
Postoperative follow up in 2 weeks for reassessment possibly drain treated veins to help prevent staining of the skin
-
Total time from injection to resolution of the treated sites can be 6 to 8 weeks
-
With recurrence or more advanced disease the possibility of venous insufficiency/high venous pressure may be promoting the veins to stay open. An ultrasound can help discern if you have Venous Insufficiency.
SYMPTOMS OF VENOUS INSUFFICIENCY
Swelling in your legs
Tight, itchy or painful legs
Painful walking requiring you to rest
Staining of skin, brown coloring of your legs usually near the ankles
Varicose veins, spider veins, reticular veins (signs of venous pressure)
Leg ulcers, recurrent wounds, slowly healing wounds
Restless leg syndrome or difficulty sleeping with leg pain waking you or your partner from sleep
Having just recently moved to Cape Coral, I am so grateful that I found Lumiere Cosmetic Vein Center. Dr. Cipriano and his entire staff are amazing. They make you feel special every time you walk in. Dr. Cipriano took care of my mom and even stayed after hours just to make sure she didn’t have a blood clot in her leg. Doctors like him are hard to find. Glad my mom was able to see him
