July Health Awareness: UV Safety

UV SAFETY under umbrella

UV Safety is needed everyday, especially here in Florida.

You can burn even with an overcast day fooling many to think they don’t need to wear sunscreen.

A good rule of thumb is – “if you’re going outside you should be applying sunscreen”. Add to the sunscreen a moisturizer and you are also helping your largest organ with nourishment. Funny it is the last organ to receive any circulation even though it’s the largest. The stepchild to the kids table that is circulation.

The primary reason for application of sunscreen is to prevent UV damage that leads to skin cancer but lets talk about something more important to many of our patients: Aging skin. Aging of the skin or loss of collagen is principally enabled by UV exposure. 80% of our collagen loss is associated with UV exposure. The last 20% is from free oxygen radicals. Defense against free oxygen radicals is accomplished by topical vitamin C.

So take message from the American Academy of Dermatology. Apply sunscreen with moisturizer and vitamin C and your skin will thank you not just today but tomorrow.

From your local Vein and Cosmetic center: Lumiere. Take care and have a great, safe, burn-free summer (with no hurricanes, fingers crossed).
