MAY IS MELANOMA AWARENESS MONTH

Melanoma is a type of skin cancer that can be serious if not detected and treated early. Florida has the 2nd most common state for new Melanoma diagnosis. Here are some tips and information to help raise awareness and understanding of melanoma for patients:

  1. Check your skin regularly: It’s important to get to know your skin and check it regularly for any changes, such as the appearance of new moles, changes in color, or changes in size or shape of existing moles.
  2. Protect your skin from the sun: UV rays from the sun can cause skin damage and increase the risk of developing melanoma. Be sure to wear protective clothing, such as a hat and long-sleeved shirt, and apply sunscreen with at least SPF 30 to all exposed skin before going outside.
  3. Know the risk factors: Some factors that may increase the risk of melanoma include a history of sunburns, fair skin, family history of melanoma, and having many moles or atypical moles.
  4. Get regular skin exams: It’s important to have regular skin exams by a healthcare provider, especially if you have any risk factors for melanoma. This can help detect any changes early on and improve the chances of successful treatment.
  5. Know the signs of melanoma: Signs of melanoma include changes in the shape, size, or color of a mole, the appearance of a new mole, and any unusual or changing spots on the skin.
  6. Seek medical attention if you notice any changes: If you notice any changes in your skin or have any concerns, it’s important to seek medical attention promptly. Early detection and treatment can improve outcomes for melanoma.

Remember, prevention and early detection are key to reducing the risk and impact of melanoma. By staying informed and taking steps to protect your skin, you can help reduce your risk and improve your overall health.
